Strap Hinge Guide

Crown offers two lines of strap hinges to meet standard and industrial swing door applications.

Standard Strap Hinges Number 9035, 9036, 9040 and 9047

Designed for use on swinging wood or metal doors. The hinge pintles are made for surface mounting to wood, formed metal, or structural steel frames. These hinges are available in disc bearing and ball bearing (Number 9047 Disc bearing only), and are also available in several strap sizes and lengths to meet most normal door applications.

Industrial Strap Hinges Number 934

Designed for use on large swing wood or metal doors, or small doors which have a high frequency of operation each day.

The Number 934 hinges are available in disc bearing and ball bearing styles. Four pintle styles are available to meet various jamb constructions and are also available in two strap sizes and lengths to meet most normal door applications. Custom Sizes are available.

To properly select standard strap hinge for a given application, several factors must be considered:

A. The frequency of door operation

B. The desired pintle pin location

C. The opening frame/jamb construction

D. The door size (width, height, thickness and weight.)

Selection is made as follows:

1. Type of Bearing

Ball Bearing Hinges are for manual or power operation with expected usage in excess of twenty operations each day.

Disc Bearing Hinges are for manually operated doors with an expected usage of up to twenty operations each day.

A. Ball bearing unit, zinc plated-packed in grease.

B. Hardened disc bearing, zinc plated.

2. Style of Pintle

Select a pintle style in respect to the desired pintle pin location and the frame/jamb construction.

3. Number of Hinges

Two hinges are required for doors up to four feet in height. One hinge for each additional four feet or fraction thereof
Door Height Number of Hinges
--up to 4'0" 2
4'0" up to 8'0" 3
8'0" up to 12'0" 4
12'0 up to 16'0" 5
16'0" up to 20'0" 6
20'-" up to 24'0" 7

4. Hinge Strap Size

The hinge strap size is determined by the number of hinges required, door width, and door weight. Each size of hinge strap is rated by a value of "Door Moment Per Hinge."

To determine the required strap size, complete the following formula and select from the chart below the proper strap size which has a rated "Door Moment Per Hinge" value that is equal to or greater than that required.

Strap Size Formula:
"D x W"
-----------
"H"
= "Door Moment Per Hinge"
Where:

"D" equals the distance from centerline of pintle pin to the centerline of door (in feet to closest 6").

"W" equals the door weight.

"H" equals the number of hinges per door as determined in step 3.

Standard Strap Hinges Number 9035, 9036, and 9047
Hinge Strap Size 3/16" x 2-1/2" 1/4" x 2-1/2" 1/4" x 3" 5/16" x 1/2"
Door Moment Per Hinge 250 350 380 425

Industrial Strap Hinges Humber 934
Hinge Strap Size 3/8" x 3" 1/2" x 4"
Door Moment Per Hinge 750 1800

5. Hinge Back Plates Number 934, 9035, and 9036 When through bolting strap hinges to doors, hinge back plates should be used to prevent damage to the door.

6. Center Hinges
The primary use of Center Hinges is on Slide-Folding Door Applications. The strap size for a Center Hinge should be equal to the size for a Jamb Hinge.
